Description
The Account of the Kingdom of Nepal by Colonel William J. Kirkpatrick is the original classic on Nepal and its people. It contains the substance of observations made during a mission to that country in the year 1793 when the author was sent to Nepal by Lord Cornwallis to mediate in the dispute between China and Nepal. Originally written for the Government and Court of Directors of the East India Company, this work on Nepal was the first to be written in English and the only reference work on the country for many years.
Colonel William J. Kirkpatrick was the first Englishman to visit the Kathmandu valley and the book is the result of the seven weeks that he spent in Nepal travelling across the Hindu kingdom. In the process of his journey, he gives the readers the first available glimpse of Nepal in all its splendour. The routes, rivers, landscape, religion, laws, art, commerce and languages are all presented in a kaleidoscopic panorama. Although some of the information provided is out of date, yet at the same time it offers a lot of material still waiting to be explored. Supplemented with maps, engravings, original papers and letters, this book has and will continue to be of immense value to scholars, researchers and readers alike
